Description

The Brühl bike and skate park on Otto-Wels-Straße is creating a versatile space for urban roller sports. A completely redesigned skate park is being built on site-cast concrete covering an area of around 550 m² – supplemented by a 1,500 m² dirt park and a low-threshold mini ramp. Together, the three areas create a wide-ranging, inclusive offering for different sports, experience levels, and age groups – embedded in the green surroundings of Brühl’s Südwiese park.

The new skate park replaces the aging existing facility with a modern, open-plan structure consisting of street and flow elements. The design was based on a participatory dialogue process with local users, whose feedback was incorporated into the planning. The result is a two-part facility with a low entry level and specifically placed features for advanced users. The elements—including bump-to-ledge, London gap, flatbars, ledges, manual pads, and an accessible plateau—are positioned along clear sightlines and allow for creative, multi-track riding at different levels. Black-painted metal elements and colorful accents in blue give the park a striking yet unobtrusive identity. Green embankments and tree plantings ensure harmonious integration into the surrounding park landscape.

Right next door is the dirt park – a meeting place for informal bike sports such as dirt biking, BMX, and MTB, established in 2022. With flow, medium, and jump lines, the facility offers a progressive track design for beginners as well as experienced riders. The design is based on the requirements of the active scene: wooden anchors in the jumps ensure dimensional stability, while bark mulch landings reduce the risk of injury. The terrain drains via gentle slopes into the surrounding green areas to prevent material loss due to erosion. A container serves as a user-operated space for tools and maintenance.

An additional integrated mini ramp complements the offering as a low-threshold element for first tricks, relaxed riding, or communal skating—especially for beginners or younger users. It connects the two parts of the facility both functionally and socially, creating transitions between user groups.

The combination of skate park, dirt park, and mini ramp creates a holistic range of activities in public space—openly accessible, inclusive, and embedded in the scenic surroundings of Brühl’s Südwiese. The Brühl bike and skate park thus becomes a diverse meeting place for exercise, encounters, and appropriation – surrounded by greenery, designed for the needs of an active and diverse user group.
