In the historic Prinzenpark in Braunschweig, a new urban sports landscape has taken shape on the site of the former roller-skating rink. Since its opening in the winter, a modern in-situ concrete skatepark, complemented by two high-quality streetball courts, has enriched the public park. Covering approximately 3,200 m² and realized with a total investment of €1.4 million, the new facility offers a freely accessible, inclusive space that unites athletic diversity with spatial quality and urban identity.
For decades, Prinzenpark has served as a central hub for Braunschweig’s skate and basketball communities. This longstanding significance shaped the planning process from the outset. In close consultation with local users, a concept was developed that merges function with atmosphere: The multidirectional street-flow layout integrates urban features such as benches, rails, and curbs with organically flowing lines, creating a dynamic environment suitable for skateboarders, BMX riders, inline skaters, and WCMX athletes alike—regardless of age or skill level.
A standout element of the project is the new streetball area, realized in collaboration with NBA player and Braunschweig native Dennis Schröder, who began his athletic journey in this very park. Schröder played an active role in designing the full-size court, which meets professional standards. A compact minicourt completes the setup and is also used for events with temporary spectator seating. This layout allows the park to host national and international 3×3 tournaments in the future.
The integration of the new sports facilities into the historic park setting was carried out with great care. The oval geometry of the former roller rink has been preserved and enhanced with thoughtfully designed landscaping elements. New green spaces, a surrounding walking path, and the selective removal of asphalt areas in favor of vegetation increase the site’s ecological and social value. The entire facility remains open to the public free of charge. Adjustable lighting ensures year-round usability, even during evenings and the darker months of the year.
With the new skatepark and streetball courts, Prinzenpark has become an inspiring destination that blends sport, community, and urban design in exemplary fashion. The City of Braunschweig has thus set a clear precedent for the promotion of youth-oriented leisure activities and the sustainable development of public space.
