The Waldbröl Bike & Skate Park, located on the site of the former “Klus” campground, is a 7,000 m² outdoor recreation area surrounded by greenery. Situated between the countryside and the outskirts of town, the design responds to the existing topography and develops it into a versatile venue for informal roller sports – open to the public, inclusive, and intergenerational.
The natural elevation of the terrain becomes a structural principle. Instead of being leveled, it divides the facility into clear zones, provides orientation, and enables transitions between activity, recreation, and landscape. Existing green structures are supplemented and visual references are redefined. The result is a spatial structure that does not cover the terrain, but has been developed from it.
The design follows the results of an intensive participation process with local users. This resulted in three independent sub-areas with coordinated content: a skate park constructed of in-situ concrete, an asphalt pump track, and a separate downhill line. Together, they create a balanced range of activities that appeals to different requirements, age groups, and levels of experience.
The materials and design language are deliberately understated. Minimalist surfaces, organically modeled lines, and deliberate accents give the space a clear yet unobtrusive identity. An on-demand lighting system extends the hours of use into the evening, thereby increasing the usability of the facility.
The Waldbröl Bike & Skate Park has created a public space that combines exercise, landscape, and community in equal measure.
