Description

The skate park in Erkelenz is being built on the old ash field of the Willy Stein Stadium along the Westpromenade. On a total area of 900 m2, the design takes angular elements from urban space (benches, railings, etc.) and combines them individually with organic shapes (quarter pipe, volcano, etc.) to create a unique design. It serves the needs of a wide range of users, from skateboarders to BMX and WCMX. Thanks to the integration of two wheelchair-friendly access ramps, every corner of the area can also be used by wheelchair skaters.

Functionally, the skatepark is characterised by the design of two different levels as well as the level in the centre (centrepiece), which creatively combines a variety of different elements. This central feature is framed by two front sides that have both street and transition elements. Creatively, a street-like atmosphere is created through the selection of urban materials (tear sheet, granite, etc.) and textures (concrete stamp, bricks, etc.).

In addition to the choice of equipment for the skate park area, the design integration of the individual areas into the surroundings also plays a central role in the overall image of the facility. The skate park area was placed at a slightly lowered level along the newly designed access road in order to create an open atmosphere with a lot of recreational value – a concept that not least creates a safe environment for young users and gender-inclusive people. Benches on the north side of the park as well as a designated user lounge area in the southern part of the facility invite people to linger and watch. This main lounge area, consisting of three solid concrete benches, is adjacent to the sports area at ground level.

In order to extend the hours of use, especially in the autumn and winter months, a specialized skatepark lighting system has been installed.
