In Jena’s Paradiespark, a new skate and BMX park is being developed on the site of the existing skate facility, reorganizing the area along Burgauer Weg as an open meeting place for informal movement. Across approximately 1,200 m², a versatile space is being created that combines sporting quality with a strong sense of stay and has emerged from an intensive participation process with the local scene. The users’ needs were refined through several workshops and translated into a concept that understands the facility as a freely accessible, inclusive, and long-term attractive movement space.
A defining feature of the project is its clear organization into two distinct yet coordinated areas: an approximately 600 m² skate area in in-situ concrete and an approximately 300 m² BMX jump line in timber construction with a Skatelite riding surface. While the concrete section is designed to be open, versatile, and creatively usable, the jump line establishes its own spatial focus and adds a section clearly geared toward airtime and progression. The result is a facility that brings together different riding styles and user groups without forcing everything into a single unified surface.
In terms of design, the scheme is deliberately based on clarity and integration. Sand and green tones, black accents, and carefully applied concrete stamps give the park a calm and distinctive identity that fits naturally into the setting of Paradiespark. Taller elements are positioned along the edges, keeping the overall layout open and easy to oversee. Several seating areas with concrete elements and timber tops, together with the integration of the existing wall as a seating edge, reinforce the park’s role as a social meeting point. The barrier-free WCMX access route, leading from the western entrance up to the upper level, further emphasizes the intention of making the park feel like a natural place for everyone.
