Description

A new skate and parkour park will soon take shape along the banks of the Fulda River in Kassel, transforming a formerly unused parking area into a vibrant space for movement, encounter, and recreation. The project aims to convert the roughly 800 m² site into an open sports landscape that is not only functionally effective but also reinforces the natural character of the Fulda waterfront. The design includes a state-of-the-art, 400 m² in-situ concrete skatepark and a 385 m² parkour area arranged across multiple height levels. The planning was carried out through a specialized collaboration between LNDSKT (skatepark design) and DSGN Concepts (parkour area), ensuring tailored solutions based on the diverse needs of local users.

During the planning phase, particular emphasis was placed on integrating the project into the surrounding landscape. The aim was to preserve the existing tree population, reduce sealed surfaces, and enhance the green character of the Fulda riverbank through targeted vegetation and spatial planning. The skate area was conceived as a compact street-flow park with a distinct formal language. Based on user feedback, classic street elements such as rails, ledges, and benches were defined with a bold visual identity and implemented with careful attention to detail. Pigmented concrete, polished granite surfaces, and powder-coated steel elements were used to achieve a high-quality result in both aesthetics and tactile experience.

To improve the overall atmosphere and usability, the skate area was slightly recessed into the terrain to provide a visually open yet acoustically and spatially protected environment. The adjacent parkour area was designed on multiple terraces in the western section of the site. Various wall heights, jump bars, and functional zones offer a gradual increase in difficulty, catering to both beginners and experienced athletes. The clear spatial separation between the skate and parkour zones also creates distinct areas for active sports and quieter use.

Flood protection was a central concern throughout the planning process. To meet the requirements for flood resilience, the skate area was planned with a lower elevation, while the parkour zone was slightly raised to compensate. Natural water flow lines were taken into account, and a functional drainage concept was developed to support the site’s ecological performance. At the same time, a cost-effective unsealing strategy and targeted integration of green spaces significantly improved the site’s microclimate and ecological value.

The future Skate and Parkour Park at Schützenstraße will not only become a new destination for physically active people of all ages, but also serve as a forward-thinking model for inclusive and sustainable development of public space in Kassel.
