Description

The new Pulheim Bike and Skate Park, located east of Hackenbroicher Straße, is a versatile exercise area that permanently activates a previously unused green space and redefines it as a public meeting place for urban roller sports. The redesign follows the principle of free, open, and outdoors and is based on an intensive participation process with local users, whose needs and ideas were incorporated into the planning.

At the heart of the project is the combination of a skate park constructed from in-situ concrete and a bike park featuring molded clay architecture – two independent parts of the facility that complement each other functionally and together create a comprehensive offering for all experience levels and age groups. The clear spatial layout, open sightlines, and spacious recreation areas promote safety and social interaction.

The skatepark is based on a street flow concept with a low entry level and creative elements for advanced skaters. The facility has a two-level design and comprises a finely tuned ensemble of ledges, banks, manual pads, and a distinctive centerpiece with a rainbow rail, bump-to-rail, and an organically shaped quarterpipe element. Pigmented concrete in a natural brown tone, deliberately placed open spaces, and sensitive integration into the surrounding green structure give the park a unique visual identity—open, calm, and clear in design.

The skate park is complemented by a bike park with three graded lines: a flow line for beginners, a medium line, and a pro line with a trick jump. The modular design follows a clear progression principle and provides low-threshold access to BMX and dirt bike riding. The facility was developed in close consultation with the active scene and is characterized by harmonious lines, wide curve radii, and an open spatial structure. The location in the countryside, combined with tree-lined surroundings and gently modeled transitions, creates a sporty landscape with a high quality of stay.

The Pulheim Bike and Skate Park is an inclusive, versatile exercise area that combines not only sporting but also social and creative qualities. The transformation of the winter tobogganing slope into a year-round sports landscape is an example of the sustainable development of public open spaces – close to nature, user-oriented, and designed for all generations.
