Located along the ‘Glückauf-Trasse’, LNDSKT created a state-of-the-art concept for the approximately 450 m2 of unused space. With the aim of designing a ‘skate park for everyone’, the wishes and needs of all local user groups (skateboard, BMX, stunt scooter, rollerblade and WCMX) were specifically taken into account.
In addition to the choice of equipment for the various areas, the design integration of the individual areas into the surroundings also plays a central role in the overall appearance of the facility. For example, the skate park area was placed at ground level along the ‘Glückauf-Trasse’ and the newly designed access route to create a permeable and open atmosphere with a high amenity value – a concept that not least creates a safe environment for young users and gender-inclusive people. Benches on the north side of the park and a designated lounge area for users invite them to linger and watch. To create a special sense of local identity with the skate park, mining accents were incorporated into the design. For example, local Ruhr sandstone is used to clad the vertical sides of the elements. The floor pattern also picks up on the mining aesthetic with gray-colored areas that are modeled on a shaft rail system. On the eastern access ramp, a ledge with a lorry look was also designed with the option of personalized lettering.
